Rob Ashton on Electoral Reform

Every Vote Should Count, That’s Why Canada Needs Proportional Representation

I support electoral reform and proportional representation. We must push to have the voices of every Canadian heard and represented in our elections.

With democracy under threat around the world – including in Canada – we must urgently address the deficiencies that are eroding confidence in our electoral system.

In the 2026 federal election, 120 MPs out of 343 were elected to the House of Commons while failing to achieve a majority of the vote in their riding. First-past-the-post is failing voters by misrepresenting the will of the people.

The obvious solution is to replace our current system with proportional representation. That’s why I support calls to convene a citizen’s assembly that will determine the form of proportional representation to be used in the next Federal Election. Following that Election, the citizen’s assembly’s mandate would include implementing any additional improvements to ensure that the new system is the fair, trusted, and built to last.

Conservatives and Liberals don’t care about a truly representative electoral system; their backroom electoral strategies only serve to divide Canadians, especially along urban, suburban and rural lines.

The Liberals’ 2017 betrayal to voters is especially sickening; not only did they backtrack on a campaign promise, they did it while throwing their own star candidate under the bus.”

The best and fastest way to change our electoral system is with an NDP government; a government that actually believes in its promises and will deliver on behalf of Canadians.
