Statement from Rob Ashton on the 41st Remembrance of the 1984 Sikh Genocide

November 7, 2025

This November marks 41 years since the 1984 Sikh Genocide—days of organized, state-sponsored violence in India that targeted Sikh men, women, and children. Thousands were killed, families were shattered, and an entire community was left to bear the pain and injustice of those horrific events.

Four decades later, that pain endures. Sikh Canadians continue to face intimidation and surveillance for speaking out about human rights. Around the world, transnational repression has sought to silence voices calling for truth and justice. The murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar and the threats made against former NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh are stark reminders that the echoes of that violence are still felt today.

To everyone marking this solemn anniversary: you are not alone. We remember the lives stolen. We honour the survivors. We will protect those who continue to face threats—and we will stand with you as you continue to seek recognition of the 1984 Sikh Genocide and the justice that has long been denied. Never forget 1984.

Help fight for everyday people by chipping in to help Rob Ashton become the next leader of the NDP.
